In reply to: helen 's message, "peacock in a trance??" on 08:37:28 06/08/09 Mon

There was a documentary filmed in India.
The peacock put his head down and the peahen ate the ticks
that were infesting his neck--to the mutual beneifit of
both.
------
But this behavior is also to prove to peahen that he has
friendly intentions. A peahen can take advantage of this
and remove the peacock's crest feathers as I have observed
here in my own pens. Or worse--yesterday I introduced
Tinker/Stinker to a two year peahen named Peawee. She
began pecking him so violently that I decided to get him
out of there while he still had his eyeballs!!!!

Thank you so much. He always does it after displaying his fan so it makes sense that it is all part of the same ritual: that he is displaying that he has friendly intentions. It is also interesting that i have seen his brother looking VERY closely at the crest of the one in a trance - I did wonder whether he might peck at it. Today i observed them both with their heads lowered, staring into each others eyes as if in a trance! When they do it they are completely motionless - it is strange to see in such active birds.
I hope your Peawee is more friendly to some of you other peacocks.
