MORE THAN A SEASON

_________________________

Matthew 28:16-20 (NRSV)

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

- Hebrews 13:8 (NRSV)

_________________________

YOU forgot Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus," my little granddaughter shouted from the living room as I put away the Christmas decorations for another year.

"I like to keep those out all year," I replied. "Seeing them helps me remember to put Jesus in everything I do."

We spend time -- some of us, lots of time -- getting ready for Christmas. Many of us decorate the inside and the outside of our houses. We buy and wrap gifts, prepare special foods, attend and participate in church programs, and celebrate with family and friends. Then, as quickly as it comes, the season of Christmas is over.

But is it over? It takes special effort amid our seasonal activities to remember why we celebrate Christmas: it is a time to remember the birth of our Savior! As we take time to tell others about him and to live daily in the inspiration of the stories of Jesus, his birth, his life, his death, and his resurrection,
we celebrate rightly. And these are appropriate in every season of the year. God's love for you and me is forever constant; it is more than a seasonal celebration.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ. Open our
hearts and minds to keep him in our daily activities as our guide, our sustainer, and our ever-present joy. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Never lose sight of Jesus.

PRAYER FOCUS: To remember whose birth we celebrate

Famous Quotes

"Unqualified disobedience is a frequent misconception, when the rider is not only demanding but also not listening to the horse. If the horse is a strong personality the result is a notoriously resistant animal: if the horse is a submissive weak personality, it can be brainwashed into a mechanical automat, a zombie. Both are contrary to the correct dressage."

Tibor Podanyi

"One should avoid resistances, instead of trying to conquer them."

Aubert

"When, due to his conformation, one can expect only a limited extension from a horse, one should, if the movement is correct and rhythmic, evaluate this performance as high as the impressive lengthening of a horse that was born with this talent."

Kurt Albrecht

"It is not the speed, neither the number of strides, that should be valuated during the pirouette, but it the rhythm of the jumps and the maintenance of the balance during the turns."

Hans von Heydebreack ( 1866-1935 )

"Those who devote themselves to practice without science are like sailors who put to sea without a rudder or compass and who can never be certain where they are going. Practice must always be founded on sound theory."

Leonardo da Vinci

"The horse thinks he is his own master, but in fact he is my slave."

Unknown

"The arms are not just there for their beauty, they are there so that you can use them."

Nick Hartog

"Allow your horse to be brilliant. he can not be made to. It must come from within, because of his confidence and pride in himself and his respect (not fear) for his rider."

Bert Hartog ( 1943 )

LIFE'S MAZES

_________________________

Isaiah 43:1-5 (NRSV)

But now thus says the LORD,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you.
Because you are precious in my sight,
and honored, and I love you,
I give people in return for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
Do not fear, for I am with you;
I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you;

The LORD says, "Do not fear, for I am with you."

WE went to pick apples one warm October day. My grandson, Corey, wanted to walk through the Maize Maze, a series of pathways cut into a cornfield on the farm. I told him to go ahead and that I would wait at the car. He insisted that I go through the maze with him. I told him that I would get lost if I tried to find my way through the field. Corey thought a minute and then said, "You won't be lost, Grandma. I'll be with you."
How could I be lost if Corey knew where I was?

God has made the same promise: "Do not fear, for I am with you." "It is the LORD your God who goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6). Through the maze of living, the floods of loss, the fire of trials, the desert of loneliness, I will never be lost because God is with me. How can I possibly be lost when God is with me at all times?

Prayer: Thank you, God, for your loving care and for never losing
sight of us, no matter how lost we feel. Give us courage that comes from knowing that you are with us. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
God's love is our security as we make our way through life's maze.

MARKINGS

_________________________

Psalm 121:1-8 (NRSV)

I lift up my eyes to the hills --
     from where will my help come?

My help comes from the LORD,
     who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved;
     he who keeps you will not slumber.

He who keeps Israel
     will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is your keeper;
     the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day,
     nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all evil;
     he will keep your life.

The LORD will keep
     your going out and your coming in
     from this time on and forevermore.

MY brothers and I learned from our father to love reading. When one of us bought a book, we passed it along so that we could all read the same book. I always tried to get a book after my dad read it because as he read, he marked his place by pressing his thumbnail into the page, making an indentation. When I read the book, I came across his thumbnail marks and smiled. My dad died three months ago. The book I'm reading now will be the last book in which I'll come across his thumbnail marks.

In a similar way, there are marks in our everyday lives that reveal where God's hand has touched our world. On an ordinary day, I see a flower, hear a bird's song, or feel a gust of wind; and it makes me smile. Those marks remind me that God was here before I was. They remind me that God is watching over us always and holding a place for each of us in heaven.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for unexpected evidence of your presence.
Amen.

A SUPPORTING FELLOWSHIP

_________________________

Romans 15:1-6 (NRSV)

We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Each of us must please our neighbor for the good purpose of building up the neighbor. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, "The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me." For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul wrote, "We who are strong in the faith ought to help the weak to carry their burdens."

- Romans 15:1 (TEV)

_________________________

A climbing rose grows beside our patio. Near the end of summer, I noticed a broken cane from the plant lying on the grass. To get it out of the way I placed it among healthy canes, expecting to go back and care for it later.

When I began to prune the roses the following spring, I discovered that something had happened. Supported by healthy canes, the wounded cane had healed and was putting forth new growth and buds. As I looked at the rose cane, once broken but now strong, I thought of the Christian community and Paul's quoted words came to my mind.

The Christian community at its best is a supporting and healing fellowship where individuals with varying needs and gifts are bound together in the love of Christ. When we are strong and healthy, we can extend care and support to someone who is broken and hurting, and in turn, when we are broken, receive help. In the supportive and nurturing environment of the community of faith, healing occurs, strength returns, and new growth takes place until each individual bears fruit.

Prayer: Holy God, may each of us find and give support within the
healing and strengthening fellowship of the church. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
The community of faith helps us to heal, grow strong, and bear fruit.

-- Howard Coop (Kentucky, U.S.A.)

Everything love is ...

Love is patient,
love is kind.
It does not envy,
It does not boast,
It is not proud.
It is not rude,
It is not self-seeking,
It is not easily angered,
It keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects,
always trusts,
always hopes,
always perseveres.
Love never fails.

Testing Hay

Bad hay is bad for your horse. In addition to being just plain unappetising, molds and dust in hay or other forage can trigger colic. Some horses have an allergic reaction to dust and mold spores, leading to respiratory conditions such as COPD (also known as heaves).

Therefore, it's very important to be able to recognise good quality hay (and equally, to recognize and avoid
bad quality hay).

The following tests will help you ensure that the hay you are feeding your horse is not harming his health:

General appearance - Good quality hay will have a leafy appearance and not contain a lot of stalks. It should not contain foreign matter, such as twigs and branches, or weeds.

Color - The greener the hay, the better for your horse. Green hay is fresh and contains more nutrients. Yellow hay is older and has probably lost nutrients, although it's still generally safe to feed. Grey or black hay is an indication of mold and should be avoided at all costs. Take a bale apart to check the inside, black sections of mold inside the hay indicate bad baling or storing procedures.

Smell - Good hay has a sweet smell - you know the one, that sweet, grassy smell we all love! Stick your nose up close and breathe deep. Remember, your horse's head will be this close when he is eating it. If it makes you turn your nose up, he won't appreciate it either. Any whiff of mold or dust should be a warning that the hay is not the best quality.

MY BOOK OF LIFE

_________________________

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (NRSV)

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.

_________________________

THE beginning of the new year is a good time to review the past and to look ahead to the future. On the first Sunday of the year, everyone in my Sunday school class makes a list of goals for the new year, seals the list in an envelope, and keeps it until the following January. Seeing what I wrote the year before is always interesting.

As I review the past, I think of times when the pages in the book of my life seemed to flip over in rapid succession. At other times, when pain claimed all of my attention, the pages seemed to stick together. Some pages are exciting, others are sad or scary; but most of them are ordinary.

As helpful as this review may be, however, I don't want to spend too much time thinking of the past or trying to catch a glimpse of what lies ahead. Today deserves my attention. Knowing we can handle only one day at a time, God gives us one day at a time. I want to give my attention to today's page as God's gift.

Prayer: God, teach us to use each day for your honor and glory.
Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

Types of Hay Bales

Farmers produce hay in a variety of ways. Depending on your storage facilities you can choose from the following:

Square Bales

The most common, of course, is the square bale. These are actually rectangular and can weigh anywhere from 50-70 lbs. These are both easy to handle and to store. They are bound with either baling twine, a very strong multi-ply synthetic twine, or wire. Some horse owners prefer baling twine over wire because of the multiple uses that baling twine can be put to around the farm and stable!

Square bales should be stored under cover, out of the wind and rain. They should not be laid directly on the ground, but should be raised up (on pallets, for example) to allow airflow and to prevent moisture being absorbed from the ground. For fire safety reasons, hay should be stored in a separate building, away from the stables.

Round Bales

Round bales weigh anywere from 800-1200 lbs. Because of this, the single horse owner won't usually use round bales, especially since you need a tractor to be able to move them. They are popular, however, in large horse facilities where they can be placed in a pasture and a number of horses can eat from them.
Round bales should also be stored off the ground and covered so the rain doesn't get to them.

Cubed Hay

Hay cubes are made from coarsely chopped alfalfa, or grass/alfalfa mixes. They generally come in bags weighing about 20 lbs and are therefore easy to store. They are more expensive to feed than baled hay, but there is less waste. I tend to feel that hay cubes are too hard, but having said that, I've never found a horse that won't eat them with relish!

Silage and Haylage

Hay that is harvested and stored with a moisture content of 50-70 per cent is called silage. Although this is popular as a forage for cattle, the low PH content, the high potential for molds and the risk of colic, make it unsuitable for horses.

Big bale haylage is made from legumes which are allowed to wilt to 40-60 percent moisture content and then bagged. When feeding haylage to horses, it is important that the haylage be stored correctly, so that mold doesn't form. The haylage should be used quickly (within seven days) of the bag being opened.

In the UK, bagged forage, with a moisture content between 35 and 45 percent, has been popular in recent years when hay has been hard to find.
