LIKE A CHILD

_________________________

Matthew 18:1-4 (NRSV)

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."

_________________________

Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

- Colossians 3:13 (NRSV)

_________________________

I was eating dinner with my two-year-old grandson Joy and his mother. When Joy began to misbehave, I spoke sharply to him, more sharply than was necessary or appropriate. He left the dinner table and ran -- sobbing -- to his grandmother's lap.

After I finished my dinner and began to head toward my bedroom, Joy wished me good night. I asked him to take his dinner. He jumped from his grandmother's lap to go eat.

His readiness to forgive changed the tone of our interaction. Jesus' words from Matthew came into my mind: "Unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Joy loved me and so he forgave me, reminding me of that verse. I resolved to be more like Joy when I am hurt or misunderstood by others.

Prayer: Our heavenly Father, bestow on us the power of the Holy
Spirit to understand your words, and enable us to forgive others, even if our feelings are hurt. Like Jesus, we pray, "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever."* Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Be ready to forgive.

The Lipizzan..

BREED ORIGIN..

The Hapsburg family controlled both Spain and Austria when the art of classical riding revived in Europe during the Renaissance. There was a need for light, fast horses for use in the military and the riding school. The Spanish horse, produced during Moorish rule by crossing Berber and Arab stallions with Iberian mares, was considered the most suitable mount because of its exceptional sturdiness, beauty, and intelligence.

In 1562, Maximillian II brought the Spanish horse to Austria and founded the court stud at Kladrub. His brother Archduke Charles established a similar private imperial studfarm with Spanish stock in 1580 at Lippiza (nowadays: Lipizza [Italian], or Lipica [Slovenian]) near the Adriatic Sea. Here on the Karst plateau near Triest the type of horse which was bred in Lippiza was called the Lippizaner. Today in Europe the breed is called Lipizzaner or, in America, Lipizzan.
