What is the sin of Sodom? If you listen to some televangelists they might tell you that God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because people practiced homosexuality and many people who have studied the bible might tell you the same thing. [4] But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: [5] And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. In the above passage the Hebrew word for "know" or yadha usually means "have thorough knowledge of." It can also mean to examine the visitors credentials, or in very rare occasions it means sexual intercourse. : Why do Christians choose to use the much rarer meaning? Was this the authors intended meaning? Let's assume it was for the moment and follow the sexual interpretation. So what does Lot do? He is appalled at the "homosexual" requests of these visitors and breaking of very old hospitality rules and protects the visitors by offering his two daughters to the sex crazed crowd instead. Would not that be morally considered wrong by today's standards? : If this is the case I can't help but feel sorry and pain for the two girls. The people of Sodom say no to Lot's offer and the angels make them blind and Lot and his family are rescued by the angels and the cities are destroyed. There are a few other things to this story that if we follow the "sexual" interpretation of "know" it does not make any sense either. Why were the judgements to these cities announced before the alleged homosexual incident? Why were "all" of Sodom's people involved in this assault on Lot's house, when at no time in any culture has there been no more than a small percentage of the population homosexual? : Why did Lot offer his two daughters if he thought they were only interested in homosexual activity or homosexuals? And last and most important, why do all of the other passages in the bible referring to this incident not raise the issue of homosexuality? [35] And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. [36] Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. If this whole incident is dealing with sexuality then why does God spare Lot who after the incident commits incest with his daughters in the above passage? Maybe...just maybe...God was talking about the great injustices that we do to others with our thoughts or neglect and lack of acting towards others with love.
