It took us less than 24 hours to get back on track. Yes,we were very upset by the guilty verdict, but we knew it was an uphill battle from the start. Ralf was convicted almost 2 years ago by the media, and the good people of sarasota simply followed suit.Ralf was never going to get a fair trial in Sarasota and Geoff and everyone involved with the defense knew this. We had hoped that Geoff could get them to do their duty and judge on the evidence and not on rumor, lies, allegations, and bias. That did not happen. Geoff did a wonderful job; no one could have done better. Geoff made sure that every reversable error was documented in the court record, and there were many throughout the trial. This conviction will be overturned and a new trial will be forthcoming. You will all be happy to know that Geoff will continue to be Ralf's lawyer for the new trial. Unfortunately Geoff is not an appeals lawyer so someone else will get the conviction overturned, but you can be sure that Geoff will be there to help in any way he can. The next time there will be no question that Ralf cannot get justice in Sarasota and there will be a change of venue, maybe Jacksonville, or Miami. Charlie Roberts will not be able to pull all the tricks with an unbiased jury pool and a judge who will not want to see a verdict overturned for reversable error. I don't know how Geoff coped with some of the things that went on. The judge let in purely hearsay testimony for the prosecution but denied Geoff the same opportunity. She told the jury to disregard Nancy's testimony from the hearing and then let the prosecution use it in their closing. She refused to let in court documents that showed that Nancy repeatedly lied under oath. She let the purjured testimony of Lynn Beals stand. She ignored the fact that the prosecution was coaching their witnesses to change their statements once they got to court. Finally she allowed the prosecution to discredit Geoff's experts by saying that they were instrumental in setting O J Simpson free and could not be trusted. This is just some of the things that will get us a new trial. It was clear from the beginning that they were out to railroad Ralf. What amazes me is that they think that they can get away with it. They don't know Geoff very well. He took this case because he believes in Ralf's innocence and he will win an aquital for Ralf in a new trial. However in the meantime it looks like Ralf will be doing some time in the prison system until the verdict is overturned and a new trial scheduled. Ralf and I will cope with this, as well. I will relocate where ever they send Ralf. If we have to wait a year the prison system is better than county jail. At least I wil have contact visits every week and Ralf will be able to go outside. Ralf is not the first innocent person to wind up in prison and he won't be the last. I just thank God that we have someone like Geoff in our corner. We lost a battle, but not the war. I will see my husband a free man yet. We are not discouraged only more determined to win and see justice done. Geoff will not lose a second time.
