Subject: The thefts continue...

WHOOOOSSSH! My mount and long companion, Tear, reared as the ground before me burst forth with magical fire. My momentarily dazzled sight returned to me and registered a sword in the enemy mage that was not there before. Lance, parrying a fireball with his shield, pulled his sword free and sheathed it in a single move, before packing a poultice upon a nasty burn on my side.

I held still to let him work and watched, impressed, as magic in many forms flew from the hands of Talur and Velor. Talur's serene features belied her fierce concentration and I could never read Velor's true mood as he wielded equally strange powers with only his harp in his hands.

Finally the last had fallen. We spread out to look for the Candle of Love, but the doubts that had been strong in my mind before were almost assumed now. The place was a dump. Whoever hired the thief that had been caught had money, and nobody with money would live here.

After a while I called the others back. I was about to address them when one of the enemy mages suddenly appeared in the next room, having recalled back from some errand. We charged in and immediately recognised one of the leaders of this cabal. She was quick to hurl abuse at us, but, obviously recognising her predicament, no magic.

"Where is the candle?!" bellowed Lance,

"What candle?!" raged the incensed mage,

From those words I knew what I feared was true. "Sorry guys, I think we've been on a wild goose chase," I began. "The thief who told us he was hired by these mages escaped with assistance last night. It seems more than likely that he was just buying time with this story."

I sat up, and stretched muscles sore from sitting so long. I had pondered long the missing Candle of Love and had reached some not entirely welcome conclusions. Two artefacts of great importance to the people of Britannia had gone missing in a very short period of time. It seemed somebody was trying to cast doubt into the hearts of the people of Britannia, doubt in their ability to deal with the evil influences that existed in their land. With the disappearance of only two artefacts, the most important lesson the Avatar taught us was already being forgotten.

We are not powerless. With trust in the virtues and our comrades, we can defeat enemies far greater than even the Avatar could.

It seemed likely to me that whoever stole the Candle of Love was also responsible for the theft of the Avatar's anke. The story of the daemon ritual destroying the Avatar's anke, though elaborate, was probably just a ruse to end our searching for it, just like the mage fort would have ended our search for the Candle of Love, had we not captured one of their number.

All this pointed at a final disturbing conclusion.

We had an enemy. A smart enemy. A hidden enemy.

And all I could think to do, was wait for them to strike again. What would they go after next?

So! Rangers... keep thy eyes open and thy ears as well. Any information you can gather on this enemy may prove to be essential for Britannia's future.

Wow, longest post I've had in a while. Next week will be a regular hunt. If I get time to write a story for it, I shall, but I'm back at work and time is getting hard to find.

HOWEVER... the next hunt in this scenario will be quite an experiment. I have seen nothing like it before in UO and it may well burn big holes in the ground for new lows, however, it could also work very well.

The next scenario is very much centred on roleplaying. There will be very little to no fighting involved. In order for this event to work well, I think it will be important for people who hope to attend, (and even those who doubt they'll be able to) to write backgrounds for their characters. Post them on the msg board and send them to Tal who will hopefully be able to get them added to your profile on the members pages. Out of necessity, (things beyond my control) the next scenario won't take place for at after at least two more regular hunts. Hopefully this will give you all time to get your backgrounds posted.

Also, (and this is a long shot) if anybody really enjoys writing, (he he) and would like to expand on the storyline I'm presenting as I can, by all means ICQ me, we'll talk about it, and so long as it doesn't stuff my existing storyline, I'd love to see it posted. I thought this worked really well with the opening to the ORPA civil war stories we had going (eg, Mags communing with daemons) and would like to see more of it in future.

*huff* *puff* have fun all,
Pugs
