I had the same kind of problem and it was my charging system, make sure your battery and alternator are working properly! take it to murrays and they can test both for free.
As far as getting more power from a 2.8, get a new intake and better exhaust, cleaning your injectors and getting a new ignition system (coil, plugs & wires) also helps alot and you can get that 2.8 faster than any chink mobile good luck!

my 1985 firebird wont start sometmes but when i keep messing with the ignition it eventually turns on what could be the problem? this usually happens in the early morning or in the night time.
