SECTION 7
Revelation given to Joseph Smith, Jr., and Oliver Cowdery in Harmony, Pennsylvania, April 1829, in response to their prayers concerning the meaning of John 21:20-24. The 1835 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants states that this was "translated from parchment, written and hid up by himself (John)."

1aAnd the Lord said unto me, "John, my beloved, what desirest thou? For if ye shall ask what you will, it shall be granted unto you." bAnd I said unto him, "Lord, give unto me power over death, that I may live and bring souls unto thee." c And the Lord said unto me, "Verily, verily I say unto thee, because thou desirest this thou shalt tarry until I come in my glory, and shalt prophesy before nations, kindreds, tongues, and people."

2a And for this cause the Lord said unto Peter, "If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? For he desiredst of me that he might bring souls unto me; but thou desiredst that thou might speedily come unto me in my kingdom. b I say unto thee, Peter, this was a good desire, but my beloved hath desired that he might do more, or a greater work yet among men, than what he has before done; yea, he has undertaken a greater work; c therefore, I will make him as flaming fire, and a mnistering angel; he shall minister for those who shall be heirs of salvation who dwell on the earth; d and I will make thee to minister for him and for thy brother James; and unto you three I give this power and the keys of this ministry until I come.

3 "Verily I say unto you, Ye shall both have according to your desires, for ye both joy in that which ye have desired."

Doctrine and Covenants 7:1-3

Lest I be accused of "spewing" scripture, I will have to add a few remarks. This scripture of the CofC was a revelation from God to Joseph Smith, Jr. While using his seer stone, Joseph saw an image of a piece of parchment that had been lost or hidden. This was like the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, except that the scroll found was only visualized spiritually without actually being physically recovered.

The translation of the writing on the visualized parchment fragment was also rendered to him spiritually. It tells of the apostle John asking Jesus to make him immortal, so that he will not have to die and leave the earth until the Second Coming. This would have had to have happened between the Resurrection and the Ascension, since the disciples did not actually become aware in faith that Jesus would actually return to earth.

The startling information that this contains tells us that the disciple whom Jesus loved still walks the earth, and that true Christianity was never lost from the earth, because one of Jesus' own disciples is still here.

Although the CofC now claims that Joseph Smith III was its founder, this scripture was produced by his father, Joseph Smith, Jr., canonized by the 1830 church, and put into its volume of scripture. The CofC has carried over this volume of scripture (D&C) into its own canon. Since it concerns an important and essential message that the Bible lacks regardling the passion, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, I thought it appropriate to include it here, since members of the World Council of Churches are completely unfamiliar with this scripture, and have never had the joy of reading it, because it is not in their canon of scripture.

That is why John posted it here as a "scripture reading." The CofC has three volumes of scripture, so he unconsciously does not refer to the Bible passages he posts as "Bible readings," but as "scripture readings." We can all applaud his honesty.

If he calls it "scripture reading," those whose canon of scripture contains only the Bible unconsciously translate the title "scripture reading" into "Bible reading." But as long as he does not appear to be limiting his scripture quotes to the Bible alone (even though this is merely an "appearance" rather than reality,) members of the RLDS church will read them uncritically without it dawning on them that John is carefully selecting scriptures that are not from the Inspired Version, Book of Mormon, or Doctrine and Covenants. This is so that lurkers from other churches will not realize that the CofC is a "Mormon" church, and so that they will not get an eyeful of just what a quantum leap the CofC canon of scripture is over the 66 books of the Protestant Bible.

George

"If the Book of Mormon is the word of God, no one can reject it and be saved. If it is a cunning deception, then no one can receive it and be saved."
Orson Pratt, apostle of the CofC under Joseph Smith, Jr.
