John, since the CofC has provided a corrected edition of the Bible, restoring the parts that were carelessly left out, or deliberately altered, I have endeavored to give a more correct picture of the CofC's message by adding in the portions that the CofC World Conference has declared to be more authoritative for the CofC than the translations of the Massoretic Text, such as the NRSV.

The New Stone Tablets

1 The LORD said to Moses, "Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them >the words [of the Law, according as they were written at] first on the tablets, which you >broke; but it shall not be according to the first, for I will take away the priesthood out of their midst; therefore my holy order, and the ordinances thereof, shall not go before them; for my presence shall not go up in their midst, lest I destroy them. But I will give to them the Law as at the first, but it shall be afer the law of a carnal commandment; for I have sworn in my wrath, that they shall not enter into my presence, into my rest, in the days of their pilgrimage. Therefore do as I have commanded you, and 2 be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai. Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain; not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain."

4 So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the LORD had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands. 5 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation." 8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. 9 "O Lord, if I have found favor in your eyes," he said, "then let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance."

Ex 34:1-9 (NIV [with corrections as authorized by the CofC World conference, when it approved Joseph Smith, Jr.'s 1833 revision of the Bible as its "last resort for doctrine."])

That's one of the paradoxes in the CofC. It claims that it is not the church started by Joseph Smith, Jr., yet it is the only branch of the Restoration that uses the Bible as doctrinally corrected by Joseph Smith, Jr. himself.

Lurkers should acquaint themselves with the other missing portions of the Bible, which are restored under the endorsement of the CofC. These restored portions are proclaimed as doctrinally correct over the standard Biblical text.

The question is, Why would a CofC priest quote Bible verses that his church has proclaimed by Conference action to be inadequate and inferior to the real Bible?

If I were a legal representative of an organization that had authoritatively established that the equivalent of two whole verses was missing from this passage, I would quote a Bible translation that had the material in it that was inspired by God. To do otherwise would deceive those unfamiliar with the calling of a CofC priest to suppose that the CofC endorsed erroneous and defective scriptures.

George
