Material objects are supposed to be possesions. When you have bought something that possesses you, that is an idol. Likewise, some persons possess beliefs. In the case of others, the beliefs possess them.

The Book of Mormon can be an idol.
The Bible can be an idol.
An activist cause can be an idol. Carrie Nation was possessed by the idea of Prohibition.
