You might like Dale Broadhurst. He is an independent thinker who has done a great deal of mission work for the RLDS church (until he caught a rare virus not seen in the U.S.) He refused calls to the priesthood because he said that it was doubtful that Joseph Smith, Jr. had actually restored the Old Testament priesthoods. When he finally consented to be ordained, the fundamentalists deliberately made the ceremony so odious to offend his Jewish wife that he opted to leave the church instead.

Although he was a rare case of someone being chased out of the church by fundamentalists, he correctly perceived the marxist leanings of the hierarchy, and the underhanded subversion that they practice, so you might not trust him as much as your emotional response to his fresh intellectual outlook might make you want to.

Brother Broadhurst operates the Solomon Spaulding library, and wrote his master's thesis at a Methodist divinity school on similarity between literary forms of the BoM and the existing Spaulding literature.

He also contributes to the site on Book of Mormon geography, which subscribes to Vernal Holley's (also RLDS) idea that the geography of the Book of Mormon can be explained by placing it in Solomon Spaulding's locale of the Great Lakes, Ohio, Western NY state, Pennsylvania, and the Delaware Peninsula.

The "sea" whose Nephite name meant "Large, to exceed all," is none other than Gitchee Goomie, or Lake Superior --and both these names pretty much mean that.
