I think the CofC is unsuccessful, not to our perspicuity, Lois, but due to the same lack of divine inspiration that the sons of Sceva exhibited in Acts 19.

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over those who had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, "We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches. And there were seven sons of [one] Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, who did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus Iknow, and Paul I know; but who are you? And the man in who9m the evil spirit was leaped upon them and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

One cannot do evil secular works, and expect anybody to respond to one's invocation of Jesus' name. Jesus' disciples will not respond, nor will the Devil. In fact, the Devil rather likes self-appointed religious crusaders and reformers who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and indeed, who deny the personhood of God the Father. The Devil eats the oxymoronic "nontheistic Christian" social activists for breakfast.

These multigenerational priests in the CofC, who have been inbred by calls from father to son for going on two centuries are pretty much like the sons of Sceva. Just because your daddy called you to the priesthood doesn't mean that God called you to the priesthood -- unless you're Jesus.
