Well, I promise you that if you ever catch me making fun of you for being "deaf," you can always insinuate that I have autism, or something. Seldom is anyone 100% normal, although most of our aberrations are so mild and so individualistic as to defy labels.

Speaking of which, I love the now-defunct TV show "Monk," because the "defective detective" is proven time and time again to be superior for the task at hand expressly because of his defects. Most of the other ones I am familiar with that pursue this line of thinking are obscure children's shows that are likewise defunct, but the message is a good one, if not too heavy-handed.

One adult sci-fi program I recall had a rather famous homosexual actor playing a mentally challenged young man. During a one-time apocalyptic crisis in his locality, the lack of certain neurotransmitters in his brain made him a better champion in that circumstance than Samson or Moses would have been.

You may be deaf for a good reason that isn't even obvious, yet, John, although I hope for your sake that the purpose is something a little less melodramatic. You may turn out to be the one-note man without whom the show can't go on.

George
