Lois, that is an old Mormon tactic. I used to work for a Mormon. I once saw a copy of the financial report for his business over the previous twenty-four months. He had built a taj mahal office (sound familiar?) But the locals had become suspicious of him because of his high fees and his opulent personal acoutrements, and business had dropped off. During that two years, he had brought in more money than he had spent during months. And the black didn't balance the red.

You may recall after he had squirreled away money to leave town (to the tune of bouncing paychecks and every other kind of check) he explained his absence by telling everyone he was going a "mission" for the church. That was not why he had to leave the country. He eventually died of a heart attack in Kenya. But it turned out that the real cause of death was a drug overdose. When miscreance and felony trumpets its piety, it always resembles false religion.

Chuck Swindoll states that three of the thousands of false gods in America today are sex, material goods, and drug abuse/witchcraft/altered consciousness (known as "pharmakeia" in the New Testament.) The worshippers of Baal are always careful to point out that they are careful not to get hung up on money, and the worshippers of Mammon are very careful to point out that they don't have illicit sex. And the Bacchanalians excuse themselves by saying they pious because they have thrown worries about money and sex to the wind. And then there are the religious syncretists who will worship all comers, as long as no claim is made on their behavior.

If you doubt that there can be idolatrous worship in Christian churches, read your Bible and see where pagan rites and altars were set up inside the Temple of Yahweh, not by foreign invaders, but by Yahweh's own people.

George
