Lois, I don't think that Wallace B. Smith appreciated any of the heat he got for any of the decisions made during his watch. For his sake, I just hope that his retirement isn't too heavily invested in the continued existence of the church.

W. Wallace Smith was, by objective accounts, humble and unassuming. It is very easy for wolves with degrees (sheepskins) to look down on someone like that. After all, for fifty years we have been taught that amoral public education is the salvation of the world, when in fact it has repeatedly proven exactly the opposite.

Some of the best leaders in the church are the least educated. I already mentioned once the elder who pronounced "idolator" as "eye-dough-later." Joseph III's confounding of the Roman Catholic doctrine of "immaculate conception" with the virgin birth of Christ is another example of a good inspired man with little education, but a heart that was right with God.

George

A man with a sixth grade education can steal out of a boxcar. Send him to law school and he can steal the whole railroad.

Theodore Roosevelt

(What Teddy didn't forsee is that sending a man to law school would enable him to steal the entire country.)
