Lois, because the Spaniards pretty much destroyed Aztec culture, and what of the Mayan they found, no one knew how to read Mayan for a long time. A Catholic priest had the delusion that he had figured out the Mayan alphabet and wrote down something like the "Egyptian Alphabet and Grammar" that Joseph Smith, Jr. worked out on his own.

In the late 1800's, Churchward got hold of Bishop Landa's "alphabet," and "translated" the codex Troyano. He "translated" the story of a great upheaval and a continent sinking into the Sea. Since the letters M and U (according the Landa alphabet,) appeared in the text, he called this continent "Mu."

Now that Mayan has actually been deciphered, we know that the Codex Toyano is actually an astronomical/astrological treatise that has nothing to do with geology, earthquakes, or sunken continents.

The interpretation of the scriptures that Steve Veazey and those like him get when they read them is based upon the interpretation system that they have bought into. Their system is basically a filter that filters out anything in the scriptures that demands personal responsibility, duty to God and fellow man, true repentance (rather than the "sorrowing of the damned,") or a day of reckoning.

I don't know who Steve Veazey's "Bishop Landa" is, but this person is probably someone like Shelby Spong, or Marcus Borg. However, there is no doubt that the stuff Mr. Veazey spews is pure Churchward, as far as accuracy goes.

But do not doubt that Mr. Veazey has read the entire scriptures. The Devil knows them backwards and forwards, too -- probably better than you do, Lois. That is, he knows the "letter" of the scriptures. The interpretation is what he likes to tamper with, as witnessed by the quote you posted. If anyone doubts that the Devil has a strong hold on our education system in the U.S., just look at the number of PhD's who know English vocabulary and grammar perfectly, but are completely unable to interpret what they read when it doesn't say what they think it ought to.
