Subject: The Richt Vay to the Kingdom of Heuine

Since there is a wide range of Christian materials available on the internet, I thought that I would provide something that isn't there, to avoid redundancy. This is an excerpt from a book I found in the library at the university in 1977. It was written by John Gaw in Scots dialect during the 16th century. I have transcribed it into modern English, although I cannot do much for the grammar.

Begin quote///////////////////////////////////////////////////

Hereafter follows how man sins against the first command[ment] of God, the which is:

Thou shalt have no other strange gods.

They sin against the command which use witchcraft or necromancy or take counsel at them which use suchlike also they that use writine letters trusting thereto to save their lives in water, land, or in battle or in any other need; also, they that use crosses, [magic] crystals, mirrors, books, words, and special names and reading and conjuration to find hidden treasures in the earth; they which take away the fruits of their neighbours' beasts; and they that rule their lives and works after special days and tokens of the heavens.and trust after [these] as the astronomers and necromancers make and write and speak thereof; they that mark or charms themselves or their house or their barns or servants or beasts, or bind herbs or writings or any other thing upon them[selves] to save them from wolf or any other peril; they that know the devil or any other creature of their adversity, trusting that those have any strength or power to hurt them without the will of God. They that take not evil and good patiently of God and thanks not him thereof, committing them[selves] in all things to him after his godly will; they sin also against this command that tempt God and give themselves willfully to any peril without any necessity, and also they which are prideful of their wisdom or science or of any other spiritual gift, or of their righteousness or good life; they that honor God only for temporal goods and riches and forget the salvation of their soul. They which trust not in God and puts not all their trust and hope in him alone; and trust not that he works all the good works in them; they which inform not their children in the Christian faith; and also others whom they can of the command[ment]s of God and of their unfaithfulness; also they which trust not [a]right nor falls in desperation of the great mercy and grace of God and of their unfaithfulness. They sin heavily against this aforesaid first command[ment.]

THE RIGHT WAY TO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ End Quote

Far from being old, musty, and obsolete, this text gives ample instruction for living in the world nowadays. Every heresy and every demonic behavior and practice never goes away -- someone always digs them up again after every few centuries or so, and winds them up again just as the Book of Mormon says regarding the Gadianton cult rites. The New Age has tried to make all this stuff respectable -- astrology, crystals, necromancy -- as when prophetic succession is announce, not by the apostles, but by spirits of the dead.

We have "prosperity" Christianity teaching that if one really, really knows God, that God will make one prosperous, because "God wants you to be rich and successful."

We have people who are so consumed with the thought of their own education and theoretical skills that they have no use for spiritual admonitions. After all, when one knows for a fact that God evolved out of something just like everything else, why bother with him?

People don't really teach their children about the faith any more. Political correctness forbids us from even mentioning that certain behaviors are sinful -- even if we don't name names -- and bowing to political correctness means that we break the First Commandment.

George

"If you love me, keep my commandments."
