The second command[ment]

Thou shalt not take the name of God in vane

This second command[ment] teaches every man and woman how they shall have themselves to god utterly before their neighbours in their words. And also inwardly in themselves. That is, they shall honour the name of God for which no man can make God known before men or to himself, after his godly nature, but only by his holy name.

How man sins against the second command[ment.]

They sin against this command who swear lightly without necessity (and rational cause) by the name of God. Also, they that swear by any evil use.

And they that swear in vain and they that swear any false oath or keep not their faith and promise in allsome things, suchlike they that swear and vow that they shall do any evil which is against the command[ments] of God.

They that curse with God's name, saying to any other god given them any evil deed or godsend any vengeance upon thee or any suchlike words.

They that speak vainly and lowly of God or his holy name, and make thereof fables and profane tokens. or turns the holy write to lightliness and scorn for their pleasure, or to make others glad and blithe to hear thereof.

They that call not upon the name of God in their adversity and thank him not when all is well as in their prosperity.

They that desire praise or vainglory for their science or wisdom, or any other gift of God.

They that call falsely upon the name of God as do the hypocrites and the pharisees, who hold themselves utterly holy before men and think that they do better than others and are hard with God because they read and praise much and do many feigned works.

They that honour not the name of God for any adversity that happens to them.

They that correct not others which take the name of God in vain in any manner.

They that hear or say or know that any abuses the name of God to vouchsafe necromancy or any other suchlike abuse and turn themselves not therefrom after their undertaking.

Also they that desire worldly glory and to have any great praise for their righteousness and holy life -- they sin against this aforesaid commandment of God.

Hereafter follows how man shall keep the [second] command[ment] of God, which is

Thou shalt not take the name of God in vain.

Thou shalt honor and praise and bless the name of God and call upon it all times both in prosperity and adversity. And desire not thy own glory nor praise that God may alone be praised and glorified by all creatures, for which he works all good in use and in other creatures whith the praise is his. To this commandment pertains all things contained in the holy write of the praising and honouring of God and his blessed name.
