Lois, there is also Jephthah Christ.

Jephthah was a half-breed son of his father and a Canaanite woman. His brothers tossed him out of the house because his mother was a "whore." And, in fact, she was. Canaanite customs just didn't agree with Israeli customs, even though the Israelites used to pretend they were Canaanites when they wanted to have a good time. Jephthah just turned out to be one of those things that happened in a Canaanite city that didn't stay in a Canaanite city.

Jephthah became a sort of Robin Hood. He went into the wilds, and attracted a band of rejects and outlaws. Apparently Jephthah was as massive as Mormon, because when the Israelites got into military trouble, they went running to the hybrid Jephthah to save them. And he became a judge in Israel. I don't think of Jepthah as being a bad person. He just wasn't Jesus Christ. At that time, people had lower expectations of a leader. You see, someone can become a false christ even without wanting to be one, or trying to be one. The people can just start thinking of him that way, and they can sin on that note, even without his help.

All the judges who were strongmen like Samson, Jephthah, and the like were a foreshadowing of the false christ -- men who didn't necessarily set themselves up as christ, but who were unconsciously looked to that way by the people.

Some of the glowing reports that I've heard about a former CofC prophet who lived during our lifetime suggests that he was one of these false christs -- whether he liked it or not.

George
