The easiest thing to do with the smart select is to not try to make it exact on the horse, just get close, but leave some of the background, after you push the delete background thing, use the eraser to clean up the lines. If you want to make something you cut out transparent when you are done cleaning up the image, press the done key, then choose the Transform tab and make transparent is uder that. Once it's as transparent as you want, click done again, then go back to change backgroud to place it on your pic or simply cut and paste the new transparent image. That help?
