Subject: Confusion about Mulder (Season 8 Spoilers)

I've been reading some of the comments on the Mulder and Scully Board, the Season 8 Board, the Dana Scully board, etc. and they left me so confused I went back and rewatched "Requiem" to see if I'd missed some sort of major scene that would give me an insight into some of these comments. I didn't catch anything, so I'll ask.
Why are there so many posts in which hostility toward Mulder is displayed? The general attitude of a lot of posters seems to be something along the lines of: Well, whatever Mulder is going through, it serves him right. It's great that Scully has been able to "get over" Mulder so quickly and establish such a good working relationship with Dogsbreath. When Mulder comes back, he can't expect to just waltz back into the X-Files Division and take over as the Special Agent in Charge.
HUH????
It certainly seemed to me that Mulder did NOT volunteer to go with the aliens for a ride on their spaceship in "Requiem". He was abducted against his will, in much the same way Scully was in Season Two. He didn't seem to be having a lot of fun in "Within/Without"; indeed, he seemed very anxious to return to Scully. So. . .
1.) Why do some people think he won't be allowed to, or will be physically unable to, return to his old position as head of the X-Files Division when he returns? Scully was allowed to, and able to, return to her position in the division shortly after her own abduction experience. In past seasons, Mulder has been allowed to retain his position despite stays in mental hospitals, fake suicides, attacking his boss while under the influence of psychotic drugs, etc. Granted, in real life, an F.B.I. Agent probably wouldn't be allowed to return to duty after disappearing for three or four months, especially if he came back babbling about aliens. In real life, however, Mulder and Scully both would have been thrown out of the bureau a long time ago for their refusal to obey orders and their frequent unexplained disappearances. By XF standards, I can't see why Mulder's current disappearance should rate a response that's any different from Scully's abduction or his own "deaths" at the end of Seasons Two and Four. From a purely practical point-of-view, I can't believe that the Fox execs would have been willing to pay DD the big bucks they have offered him to return to the show if he wasn't going to be doing, essentially, the same things he has done in past seasons.
2.) If most of you liked Mulder, why do you seem so unconcerned about his whereabouts and somewhat less than anxious to see him return?
3.) If most of you didn't like Mulder, why did you watch the show during the seven years when he was one of the main characters?
