My interpretation of the whole dream scene was this: Mulder had a choice of two lifestyles: one was represented by the "Fowl Thing/CSM/Samantha" parts of the dream and the other was represented by the "Mulder and the little boy on the beach" portion of the dream. I thought at the time — and think even more now that I've seen "Requiem" - that the little boy was the son Mulder could have, but *ONLY* with Scully. At the end he chose his life with Scully and was rewarded, I believe, with a last vision of the future - a happy day at the beach with his son.
I don't believe Mulder and Scully slept together only once. Once they "jumped the fence" why would they go back to celibacy? They were obviously on *VERY* good terms with each other during the eps between "all things" and "Requiem"; they held hands during both "Brand X" and "Hollywood, A.D." and they were settling down to watch movies and drink beer together at the end of "Je Sounais". (We know the ultra responsible Scully wouldn't drink and drive, so we have to assume she was planning a sleepover at Mulder's place!)
When two people who have been "just friends" with each other for many years become sexually intimate, it almost always has one of two consequences - either it destroys their friendship and they never want to see each other again (obviously not the case here) or they decide "This is great! Why didn't we take this step a lot sooner?" and continue to be both friends and lovers; often they get married. I've never heard of a situation where two people who had been "just friends" for years slept together one time and then decided "Let's just go back to being close friends who hold hands and occasionally kiss and watch movies together and stuff, but let's not ever actually sleep together again."
