too--advertising has been banned for a long time but if you look closely, you still see sneaky advertisements! Ball games will have signs on the outfield fence, programs may have a pack laying on a table, etc. I noticed that Scully had a brand new iMac on her desk in one of the last episodes. I wonder if the companies pay for the the advertising or if it is just something the props people do?
I know what you mean about the old movie actors--actually I think many of them are dead--there has been a lot of lung cancer in that age bracket. I had read somewhere about why they did the cigarette thing--part of it was that the health risks were never really exposed by the cigarette manufacturers. It also gave them something to do with their hands and in place of dialogue. It also was the "in" thing up until actually quite recently. There still are movies where people light up anything from stoggies to butts. I don't get it either!
