In reply to: hairytoes 's message, "This just in- DD hired as spokesman by National Council for Tofu/Tofu Products" on 01:45:35 05/01/00 Mon

I've watched this episode twice and the first time I was kind of iffy on it but the second time it really started to grow on me. I'm going to reveal myself as a bit of a dummy here but a lot of the religious stuff sort of flew over my head at first! And it seems to me DD had a few pieces of dialog in his script that I just didn't get! He's such a smarty pants!

After a second viewing I think I got most of it sorted out with Micah Hoffman but I'm not sure. Are we to assume Micah did indeed pull a Jesus and rise from the dead? I was thinking the first step were the bones assembling themselves in the crypt. I thought that scene was clever. Weid, but clever! And then he springs to life during Scully's autopsy and then she sees him on the cross and then he walks into the church as if he's been resurrected Of course all of the times we saw Hoffman doing some magic there was only one witness which could put it all down to hallucinations. But why? What was causing it? That's what I don't get. What really was Hoffman supposed to be? Yeah I know DD was doing a Judas/Jesus parallel with him and the Cardinal but was there something I missed? And how did his plot tie in with the movie? A reference to bad biblical films starring Edward G. Robinson? And what are we to think from having Scully's blood mix with the corpse when she cut herself? More of that immortal Scully plotline?

I did like all of the pokes at Hollywood and it's cliches. (Probably because I HATE the phoniness of Hollywood!) The producer/writer thing and all the other slashes. (Is DD reading slash fanfic?! ;-) ). And the bubble baths of course! Did someone else mention that looked like a Doris Day movie scene? As for where Mulder's hand was, maybe he IS reading fanfic! Hasn't there been quite a few, "Mulder and Scully on the phone and doing 'you know what' " type of stories? He definitely seemed to have his hand under water for some special reason! Probably just for us to notice it! That bubble bath scene had me LOL.

I liked the ending with the dancing zombies too. At least they were having fun! I've read posts elsewhere from people who just didn't get that scene even though Mulder explains it just a couple minutes before! Unlike some other recent eps you do have to pay attention on this one. I don't think DD was making fun of the Closure scene at all. I think he truly liked showing the zombies letting go and having a good time. Just a criticism about people taking things too seriously maybe.

I've also read that people think DD was mocking the show and fans. I think just the opposite, at least going by Mulder's end comments. His speech about Hollywood reducing people to stereotypes and two demensional characters said a lot about how he feels. He's always said that he tried from the beginning to make Mulder a real person and yet most of the media still talk about him in very simplistic terms. That's the point he wanted to make, IMO. I could be way off but that's just the idea I got from it. I think this proves he does care about the show and his character. It's just that he feels the writing isn't as good as it once was and I agree.

One thing that I will say is that this ep gives you a lot to chew on whereas so many recently have been so disposable and fade from memory shortly after you watch them. At least DD makes you think! The script was very layered and tightly woven. It also seemed to have lot of himself in it complete with Stones and Beatles references (two of his fave bands). I felt like I was really getting a peak inside DD's mind. Scary! :-)

Some things I didn't like. OK Tea wasn't it in that much but I thought DD overdid it a bit on the Tea/Mulder comments. "I'm a big fan." Mulder's a big Leoni fan? Does this mean she's appeared in some of those videos that aren't his? ;-) It just took me out of the show a little bit with that. Yes we know she's your wife Dave. You don't have to keep reminding us! I thought, from what DD said that she was going to be very funny in this and I found her rather flat actually. She didn't really add anything to the part. Any other actress could have done it. I have nothing against her other than healthy jealousy ;-) but frankly her acting didn't impress me. Ah well, love is blind I guess. And DD is certainly bowled over by her. Shandling was ok. I was worried about that just as much as Leoni and yet I did feel like it was Mulder talking to Shandling where it could have very easily have seemed like David instead.

I agree Hairytoes that it was odd that Mulder and Scully's names were kept in tact. Why didn't DD make up some goofy similar names like Moldy and Sculler or something? And Scully does seem to suddenly be more at ease. I think this just has to do with how DD sees her character as opposed to the rest of the writers. Remember The Unnatural was the first time we reall had a laughing Scully. He obviously wants her to be more fun while CC and Co. want to keep her more solemn. Who's to say what works best but I like what DD does with Scully. Speaking of X-Cops, this reminded me of that a bit. I mean we just had an ep with someone following M&S around on their job and now we get kind of a repeat. I also thought of Millenium during the scene with the cell phone. Wasn't there a scene with a ringing cell phone on a corpse in that too? We also had zombies in Millenium so was DD knocking that ep with that?

I think DD can write really well but I also think he tends to do a lot of borrowing from other sources for his ideas. But I still would like to know what other ideas he could come up with for the show if it continued. After all he created the Alien Bounty Hunter didn't he? One of the best characters!

How come Mulder has seen Plan Nine from Outer Space the same number of times as the number on his apartment building?!

One more thing, did anyone else notice DD's dog Blue? I missed her but it was pointed out that that's her next to Tea during the Scully running scene!

det :-)
