Subject: The Lois and Clark comparison. My problem with it.
In reply to: Stardoe 's message, "I totally agree with you." on 00:09:08 04/10/00 Mon

First off, let me just say that I HATE people comparing The X-Files with Lois and Clark. HATE. What possible connection do people see between the two shows? I don't see ANY.
I see the problem people had with Lois and Clark. There was no character development and it was a cheesy, live action comic book. I mean...The Superman comic itself explored the Clark Kent/Lois Lane relationship to death. Even if you aren't a comic fan, you've seen the movies. Even if you haven't seen the movies, you KNOW Lois Lane and Clark Kent end up a couple eventually. It's not like some big secret. There was so big surprise going into Lois and Clark. We all knew where it was going to end up. Clark and Lois get together and Lois finds out Clark is Superman. Wow. No one would have ever guessed.

It's also hard to get away from the comic aspect of the story. You could see it interfering in the show itself. They were trying to cater to the classic "Comic Book Geek" They get a leggy busty brunette and a hunk of burning love and then they think, "I wonder why the ratings fell after we got Lois and Clark together"
That's the only reason anyone watched that show in the first place. You knew eventually they would be together and we all waited to see it play out. That's all the show was working for anyway. They put everything they had into setting everything up so that the main characters could fall in love and get together and then they had nothing to write about after Clark and Lois got married! Does anyone see this in The X-Files? I didn't think so! ;-)

Have I bitched enough yet? No? Good, I'm not done yet ;-)

Going into The X-Files no one knew what was going to happen. We have a vastly different story, two totally different types of main characters, and room for exploration of almost every aspect of the show. There was nothing cheesy or lame about The X-Files or its characters in the beginning and its continued to be a wonderfully intelligent and entertaining show. It keeps you WANTING to watch week after week, and THAT is what makes a great TV show. That is what has made The X-Files my favorite show on television. The main characters are deeply emotional and we have some insight into what they are like. They have a profound bond between them. They love eachother regardless of what type of love you might believe they have for eachother. The stories are entertaining and mostly well thought out (except for a few, I know).

Basically, that's my rant. Someone has to see my point. :-)

Thanks for listening

Scullystar
