I interpreted a lot of sarcasm in Mulder's behavior in this ep. I think he was intending to make fun of the techno-nerds by acting overly enthusiastic. My personal opinion is that he had no idea who Darryl Misashi was but saw it as an opportunity to show off his Mulder sarcastic wit to his girlfriend Scully.
