Hi SFP!

First, I think he's only happy when he's with Scully (The Unnatural for example and earlier eps this year when they were working lighter cases and just got to be together). So I think his investment in The X-Files is also tied up in Scully. I wonder if she left the Files and went for that normal life she claims to want if he would still want to work on the Files. I think he still wants to be involved in some kind of strange occupation but I don't know if he'd continue without her.

He can perhaps be more relaxed and happy but he's also spent more of his life unhappy. Just getting good news, or in this case some much needed relief from his torment, may not necessariy change that. He's a guilt ridden person and may need other forms of guilt to fill the void lkeft by Sam. For instance his guilt about what was done to Scully.

But if anyone can help him deal with his guilt and get past it Scully can! :-)

************
That raises an interesting point, det. It's hard to know whether the tendency to wallow in guilt it a Fox Mulder inherent trait, or whether it was brought on by tragedies he's inadvertently caused for those closest to him. I was thinking that once he was rid of the Samantha angst, he could refocus his energies, hopefully on the more positive aspects of his life. But maybe, as you mentioned, he won't be able to do that. Maybe feeling guilty about something or someone is such a fundamental part of his personality that he will need to continue feel tormented. Luckily Scully seems to have recovered physically and mentally from her abduction and cancer so he can't zero in too much on her guilt-wise. And his mother's death doesn't seem to have inspired too much angst on his part either. Hmm, wonder why...

Who knows, who knows? Guess we'll have to just wait and see. One result I hope we never see is Fox Mulder and Dana Scully leading a "normal" life. Normalcy is way overrated! :-p

:-) SFP
