so hers automatically gets more credence.

I actually agree about Mulder seeing the ghosts and making peace for himself so definitively, but as far as I'm concerned, that's the ONLY reason I'd believe that Samantha is dead, yadda yadda yadda. The rest of the ep is wholly unbelievable, not necessarily because there was no body found, but because the PLOT didn't make sense to me. I'll take what I imagine to be the Scullystance in this ep. I don't believe what Mulder does, but I'm not about to take his "freedom" away from him by telling him that.

Okay, this is the second time you've brought up personal belief systems when talking about one's ability or willingness to believe the logic of the show. I am completely open to science, spirits and magic that defy current human explanation. After all, there are more things in the heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. I remember getting all jazzed up last season about the deeper implications 'Monday' had about karma. I accept that Mulder saw his sister, that Scully saw her father, and a heck of a lot of the other stuff in the context of the show. Don't pin my unwillingness to accept "Closure" on my personal beliefs, pin it on my interpretation and understanding of the plot. Ooh, ooh, question! Would you have believed the "starlight" theme if it were a stand-alone episode and had nothing to do with Mulder's sister? I wouldn't have. IMO, starlight is neither interesting nor believable enough to stand alone, and thrown into the mythology mix, it seems like it's just been invented to get the story over with.

Why is one preposterous and the other not? We have years of history (aka mythology) dealing with the 'alien' view. It's been developed upwards and outwards. It has roots in other X-files concepts. "Starlight" is like a fruit on the mythology tree, clinging by the tiniest stem, trying desperately to stay attached while shaking in the wind. And it's not even a fruit that grew from the tree! It's like someone tried to tape it up there. What I believe is not an aliens vs. religion issue- it's based on the depth and breadth of the theory.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that Jeffrey doesn't remember Samantha.

hairytoes, who honestly doesn't believe that you have a sister
