I thought they were only cocooned after death; this process then allowed them to be re-born. Spontaneous gender re-assignment was an ability that everyone in the commune had, but denied themselves. Martin, who was lured into the secular world, used it indiscriminately for his own gratification. His victims died because of a toxin that he transmitted through touch, causing a ballistic sexual reaction that the human heart & body couldn't cope with. Literally an orgasm to die for.
BTW, this is only my own understanding of the ep.
I'll have to check out the make-up thing, it's nice to see the odd continuity error.
