Subject: "The Practice" and the MSR

Okay, blame Detoured for this line of thought, because she posted something about "The Practice" on the Off-Topic board and led me to it! For those of you who don't watch the show, it's about a group of lawyers. It's more an ensemble show than "The X-Files" was (although, from what I've gathered, XF has left its "two-star" concept behind for season nine) but two of the main characters are Bobby and Lindsey, who are married to each other.
I only watch the show sporadically, so it took me a while to realize they were married, and then I assumed they'd been married since the show began, but I caught a few reruns and talked to a friend who's almost as devoted to that show as we are to "The X-Files" and figured out their whole courtship, consumation of their relationship, marriage, parenthood, etc. has happened during the run of "The Practice".
The thing is, they don't make a big deal about the two of them being married on the show; occasionally you see them in bed together, but they're usually discussing a case! I think the success of this show (it's a top 20 hit and usually gets nominated for several Emmys every year) shows that the MSR *could* have been handled the same way, without
necessarily losing viewers or sacrificing the quality of the show.
In fact, I think "teasing" the viewers for so long with the "will they/won't they" question in regard to the MSR, actually led to it being more, not less, of a focus in XF. "The Practice" is currently in its fifth or sixth season and nobody speculates about the Bobby/Lindsey relationship; the viewers know they're married, they assume they make love (since they have a baby and, anyway, that's just what married people do) but if they've ever actually shown them in a sexy love scene, it wasn't in one of the eps I've seen.
