...two bespectacled men in white shirts and black pants come in with clipboards.

"Eek!" Kande thinks. "Bible thumpers!" (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

One man peers down his nose at her. "We're releasing you from the hospital."

"What?! No one's even set my arm yet." Kande shows them her arm, where her hand dangles at an odd angle amid swollen, purple flesh. "Is this some kind of managed care decision?"

"Certainly not! This isn't the United States," the little man hauls himself up and sticks out his chest. His buddy does the same and adds, "This isn't even Canada or Australia."

"So what's the meaning of this?" Kande demands.

"Our staff therapist has diagnosed you as a malingerer, and told us the best course would be to deny you the treatment you demand and send you home," the first man tells her. The second man makes little shooing motions with his hands.

Kande is instantly suspicious. "Your staff therapist, eh?"

"Yes. I believe her exact words were 'Show no mercy.'" the second man informs her.

"She did, did she?" Kande bristles menacingly and hops off the table, her hospital gown swinging open behind her. "I'll show her no mercy!"

"Oh dear! Oh my! Call the Shipperville police department and tell them we've got a situation on our hands!" the men tell each other and then rush for the nearest phone as Kande starts opening doors and screaming loudly for the hospital therapist, a.k.a. KS.
