But the problem is DD is too young to be a convincing hockey coach, and NL is too old to be a hockey player, though if he's a failed hockey player, that could work.

How about this? DD and NL played hockey together when they were younger. They were the best of friends but also very competitive (this would give us the chance to see some young actors that could pass for young DD and NL). One of them, say DD, goes onto hockey greatness, and is now ending a hall of fame career. Going out with a bang. NL, who never got over not being good enough (or maybe he got hurt and couldn't play, or maybe DD pulled some conniving stunt to surpass him), is working as some type of blue collar worker. Mechanic, construction worker. Something happens to bring these two back into each other's lives, where they're dependent on each other for something.

Is that dumb? Is that already a movie?
