I haven't watched this episode in so long that I had forgotten how good it really is. Besides the great Scully story, we also have character development of Skinner, Mulder/Krycek interaction, and a myth plot that wasn't the muddled mess it now is.

I agree that this episode portrayed Scully as having a happy, "normal" childhood. Flashbacks of she and her sister playing hopscotch, mentioning all the kids in the neighborhood playing outside, talking about how her brother and father used to put together model planes. I could almost see Scully's mom baking cookies. I'd imagine that up until Scully became Mulder's partner Scully had always led a pretty standard life.

As far as Scully development, it struck me how just after Skinner told Scully about her sister's investigation being canned, she goes right back to work, she doesn't mention it to Mulder. If Scully does have one thing in common with Mulder it's not opening up to people. If I were Scully I would have told Mulder all about it, yelled and screamed and shown my frustration. She just goes about her business. I'm not sure if that is a sign of strength or not.

I've always kind of thought of this episode as a girl power episode. We've got Scully going off by herself to figure out what's going on. We've got this Jeraldine Kallunchek selling secrets (and of course Mulder assumed Kallunchek is a man), and we've got the French diver's wife (altough under the power of the alien oil) kicking the crap out of Krycek in the men's bathroom. So often in TXF it's Mulder, Krycek, Smoking Man, various consortium men, running the show. Not so much in this case.

Sort of along those lines, I love it when Scully identifies the plane and Mulder says, "I just got very turned on." For some reason I just love it when women do or say something that is a typical man quality. Just like Amy Wynn in Trading Spaces. I love her!
