Calling American Idol a reality show is really a misnomer even though that's how everyone refers to it including the Emmys when it's put in that category.

I don't like reality shows either. Keep me far away from The Bachelor, Survivor, Jersey Shore, Big Brother and even cheesier ones of that ilk. Once in a while I catch part of Extreme Makeover:Home Improvement. It's a nice idea, building a house for a needy famiy. Not like most of the trashy reality shows which aren't even all that "real."

Idol really is just a straight singing competition.
What I enjoy most about the show is the music we get to hear. Tell me, where else on tv can you hear good live performances of songs by The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Creedence clearwater, Simon and Garfunkel and many other classic artists? No where. One contestant did a Nat King Cole song this year. Another did one by Judas Priest. A very wide variety! That's what's fun about it to me and I think it's great that young viewers are being exposed to all this classic music. I grew up on music so maybe I'm biased. Maybe you just really gotta love hearing it.

SMH, you might like AI this year. They've made a lot of changes. And the contestants truly are the best they've ever had. Ones being voted off now in 7th and 8th and 9th place are far better than winners in past years.

BDM, Steven Tyler is a big hit! He's a breath of fresh air. Simon Cowell was getting stale.
I think everyone appreciates the fact that Steven's a real performer who has paid his dues. The kids can relate to that more than a guy who insults them and has never been a singer himself. Tyler's one problem is his mouth. They've had to bleep him several times for bad language. ;-D
