Subject: ABC's new schedule

Comments from me at the end:
****
In a considerably more aggressive schedule than probably any other network, ratings-challenged ABC will introduce eight new series -- four scripted dramas (Lost, Life as We Know It, Desperate Housewives and The Practice: Fleet Street), two sitcoms (Rodney and Savages), and two reality hours (The Benefactor and Wife Swap). The network will make changes on six nights of the week (excluding Saturday, which remains intact with The Wonderful World of Disney), comedies have been trimmed from 10 on three nights to eight on two evenings (Tuesday and Friday), and Alias will be pushed back until midseason (where it is expected to return Sunday at 9 p.m.). Also of note is 20/20, which will air on Friday only with Elizabeth Vargas as the successor to the departing Barbara Walters.
What follows is the new ABC schedule, with new series in bold and a description of each new series.

The only thing here that even kinda/sorta interests me is "The Practice: Fleet Street" and I cannot figure out how that can possibly be considered a "new" show. I guess ABC just wants to be able to say it has at least one hit among its "new" shows, but this is basically just "The Practice" with a few new characters added and a few old characters eliminated.
As a woman who spent ten years as a full-time housewife (although I always preferred the terms "homemaker" or "stay-at-home mother") I'm insulted by the very title of "Desperate Housewives". I don't think there are too many of those around in the 21st century! Most women who don't find fulfilment at home simply go out and pursue a career nowadays. . .they don't sit around the house being "desperate".
To be honest, I'm really surprised that they're renewing "Alias", even at midseason. I'm not trying to trash the show -- I know a lot of you here like it, and I haven't actually seen enough eps of it (just one full ep, I think) to have an opinon on it -- but, from a purely economic perspective, it seems like a dumb decision. An hour-long, special-effects laden drama is expensive to produce and its ratings are pretty anemic.
