To me his big old death scenes stopped having impact with Spike's death. I wept over Angel originally...and Joyce and Tara...but come on...fool me once...shame on you...fool me a half dozen times...and I would have to have lost my short term memory. I got nothing out of Anya, Cordy or Wes....or the concept of EVERYONE dying that JW wanted us to get at the end of AtS. Sure, I might cry over Wes but all the time in the back of my mind I am thinking...JEEZ...AGAIN?

That said...this is a very easy death to undo...magical after all. And you have to figure in part three of that story...the Slayers ride in and slay a few demons or Illyria does her mojo and gets the remaining Gang the hell out of dodge and we have a Hell Hopping good time with a renewed Wes.

But Angel wasn't ever slated to have the Shanshu...I think it got Fanon-ed way out of proportion. Angel from the time of his conception as a character was slated to die the heroic death for GOODNESS and no other reward...and thereby redeem his soul. The death he dies in Becoming would have been IT if David hadn't impressed JW in the one where he's the woman and given JW the idea of spin-off. Which is why I took issue with you before on thinking Angel was ever going to end up with Buffy. That was never in the cards...it's just a common cliche and so it is expected by the audience.

To quote Terry Pratchett..."Stories have a groove and they repeat the same pattern over and over again. Like water following a riverbed actors must follow the course of the story to the end...the youngest prince setting out on a quest his three older brothers have failed in...has no other choice but to succeed." Genius is what changes the story...Joss had genius but he let it become...a story that repeats.

However, I will give JW props for following through on his basic themes...the whole LOVE IS SACRIFICE thing and also for keeping Connor as Angel's "True Love". This is like when I gave kudos to him for sticking to his "Buffy will be free of her Slayer cure" subtext that ran through BtVS from day one to the very end. People would go on about her ACCEPTING the burden but JW was all about setting her free...and he did it in an interesting way (even if that way was inconsistent with the REST of the S6 and S7 storylines). I think JW should attend a bit more to his audience and also...stop doing the same damned thing over and over again...because I may only be the first one to say it...but others I think are also...BORED NOW!
