while I realize reality shows cost less to make initially, it seems to me that in the long run, sci-fi shows can be a goldmine. Look at both Star Trek and XF; they've produced movies, books, games, etc. Plus the shows can be sold into syndication and/or released on DVD for people to rewatch.
Once a reality show is over, it's over. They're similar to sporting events in the sense that the whole point of watching them is to see who wins; once you know the score, why would you ever want to rewatch them?
All this kind of ties into an odd new theory I'm developing. I believe that eventually free network TV will pretty much show full series only of reality shows and newsmagazines and will serve as a "preview" channel for sitcoms and dramas. When a new show (sitcom or drama) comes out, the networks will air half a dozen or so eps on their free broadcast channels. Then they will announce that people who want to watch the entire series need to either: 1.) subscribe to an affiliated cable channel or 2.) buy the DVD set.
In a sense, this is happening already, especialy with sci-fi shows. "Harsh Realm" debuted on FOX and then finished up its run on FX (or maybe the sci-fi channel?? but anyway, some cable channel). "Firefly" aired a few eps on network TV, then released all the available eps on DVD.
