Subject: THE SHOW!!!!!
In reply to: BDM 's message, "Re: Cinematic Titanic" on 10:40:49 04/16/10 Fri

Just got back, det. Had a great time. Man is my butt hurting, not the best seats. And skinny too. Us aging guys aren't as thin as we used to be & most MST fans aren't either. But well worth the discomfort.

Anyway, Got there at 7 like the ticket said then heard they don't come until 8:30. The Nokia theater is in Times Square on 44th St. It used to be a movie theater, I saw The Matrix there on opening weekend at a midnight showing. That was like MST for street thugs. We had to stand in line outside until 7 and I got asked by countless passersby, "what are you on line for?" Cinematic Titanic drew looks of confusion. Some thought I said Titanic the musical which closed 15 years ago. One guy who came up to me claimed he knew Trace Beaulieu but didn't know what CT was.

As we waited, the sound system played Talking Heads, Thomas Dolby, Devo, Monty Python, Frank Zappa. You know the group chose those. Mary Jo came out first to introduce the opener, Dave Gruber Allen. She proceeded to read his credits which was his wikipedia entry, saying things like seen as a background character in a deleted scene in Funny People. I knew I'd seen him & as I got home and looked him up, he was the guidance counselor in Freaks & Geeks. He did some jokes, held up a Highlights magazine & told us how it had changed since we were kids.

J. Elvis Weinstein came out next and picked up a bass guitar. Dave did some haikus to the music. Josh & Dave do a bit called WADD, the station that plays just the best parts of your favorite songs. They keep saying the real show will start in 10 minutes, over & over. They bring out Frank Conniff who says he's from NY originally. He does some jokes on his own but then J & Dave join him to do the theme song Frank wrote for a Saturday morning cartoon show he has written called Convoluted Man. Joel comes out and talks about the movie and how it has the worst monster ever in it. He introduces the whole group starting with Trace whom we hadn't seen yet.

Unlike the image you see on CT material, they had 3 stands on the left and 2 on the right. No tiered seating. Trace, Joel and Josh stand while Mary Jo & Frank sit. For the most part, they face the screen with their scripts in front of them. An occasional look to the audience on a big reaction joke or moan. As this isn't on TV, they cursed and were a bit more raunchy but not too bad. The guys all acted shocked when Mary Jo had a naughty line. Frank cracked up on one of his riffs.

The film was called Danger on Tiki Island. Also know as Brides of Blood. made in the Philippines in 1968. A scientist, his unsatisfied wife and a peace corps volunteer go to a remote island that had been near the A-bomb testing sites. One weird bit that had the audience laughing without any riffs was that the mysterious man with the only mansion on the island has a dozen midgets for servants without anyone commenting on it. The monster was awful and there were killer trees too. And virgin sacrifices.

The lines came fast & furious. I missed a bunch from laughing. A big one that got applause was when the hero and heroine embrace & then she awkwardly slides to her knees and hugs his chest as he remains standing. One of the guys yelled out "Jackpot!" The midgets were compared to Oompa-Loompas. One scene had a radioactive butterfly attack (I kid you not). "That guy got his @ss kicked by a butterfly!" The killer trees attack the rejected wife which gave us the line: "that the first wood she's gotten all film."

They took a bow after the show & we gave them a standing O. The place was sold out. After wards, they were to sign autographs but I couldn't wait around because I have to work in the morning unfortunately. Would have loved to at least talk to them but the line was long & who knew how long they'd take to come out to the table.

I saw they on Olberman via YouTube. No, I don't watch MSNBC all day, it's as boring a Fox is. He was in the crowd as was the PC guy from the Apple commercials. I was in the 11 row so I had a pretty good view. They did do a few political jokes that you wouldn't like Det. But just a few and no political diatribes. Frank had a good one when the monster lies dying, "this wouldn't have happened....if we'd had the public option..."

I always wanted to see the MST guys riffing a movie live and I got my chance. Glad I was able to catch it, I often kick myself for missing a band or performer who plays NY but I find out about it after they have gone. I hope you get to see them at some point, looks like they could keep this going for awhile. They all looked good, not that much older. Joel's hairline has reseeded some more. Frank looks a bit heavier. Otherwise, it could still be 1994.
