Years ago there was a great medical drama called "St. Elsewhere". It never was a ratings successs but the network stayed with it for several seasons since it was a high quality show.

Fast forward a few years to "ER" which became a ratings bonanza. People treated it as if it were the best doctor show on earth and the only one of its kind. I remember being ticked off then since it was getting all the recognition while the much superior, IMO, "St. Elsewhere" had largely been ignored during it's run and struggled to stay on the air. So I rarely watched "ER" during its heyday.

I don't remember "Brother's Keeper". Who was in it? yeah when I first read about "The Mentalist" I thought it sounded just like "Psyche". Once again I'm not with the crowd. I watched "The Mentalist" once but didn't care for it. It figures it would be a hit!

Yes CW, I think indeed The X-Files was more original than most shows, although CC gives lots of credit to "The Night Stalker" for inspiration.
But copying other show's formulas is what they do in tv. You see a hit--in the next couple of years they'll be ten more just like it. Usually not as good. Same thing wih movies.
