Actually "NCIS" has earned pretty strong ratings all along, but it's just slowly crept up to being at or near the very top. It's never gotten much "buzz" and has been referred to as a "stealth hit."

But "JAG" was kind of like that, too. "JAG" never got quite as high in the ratings as "NCIS" has recently been hitting, but it was on the air for about 10 years and you *never* saw the stars of "JAG" on magazine cover or on "celebrity" editions of game shows or anything like that, just as you don't see the "NCIS" actors in those places, either.

I read an article that said one of the reasons "NCIS" gets so little attention is that its viewers — while there are a lot of them — tend not to be the "cool" crowd that most magazine editors, etc. aim for. The show's audience is older than average (although my own two teenagers LOVE it, apparently it's not something a lot of teens and twentysomethings watch) and it gets higher ratings in the heartland than it does in places like New York City or California.
