I think they aired them as "finales" because they had no choide, but it's not as though an entire season has wrapped up. They didn't write ten episode seasons. They just stopped shooting when they ran out of material. Two shows I watch, Desperate Housewives and The Office, just sort of ended without any kind of season finale plot. Well Desperate Housewives had a cliff hanger, but I think it was intended to be the "going into winter repeats" cliff hanger, not a season ender.

I believe that in the case of shows like 24 and LOST, they probably won't be able to catch up because their seasons don't start until January. That's why 24 got suspended indefinitely. But hopefully other shows, like The Office, will be able to pick up where they left off, and just have a shortened season.
