I was a bit underwhelmed by the finale, I think it wasn't intended to be so by the strike. If they went back to get Kyle from sometime before he was killed, it would have to be a small window as he and Sarah made love the same night they fought the terminator and he died. If they got him too soon, no John. Also, Sarah could be killed if he's not there fighting with her. Plus it's better dramatically for John to long for his dead father.

In other time travel stories, you're not supposed to meet yourself as this would cause a paradox that could destroy the universe. Depends on the show/movie/novel as everyone has their own time travel rules that change like vampire rules. So Derek being so close to his younger self should have been a no-no. That would be weird to meet your father as a kid.
