A look at life on the bubble in TV land

Television lives ‘‘on the bubble.’’ Just like basketball teams that sweat out pick ’em day before the start of the NCAA basketball tournaments, hoping not to be left out, TV shows sweat out the possibility that they might be canceled.
Here’s a look at the lineup of ‘‘bubble’’ shows:

CBS
— The Class.
The ‘‘reunion’’ series started strongly last fall in the network’s popular Monday-night lineup but faded after the first of the year. Its replacement, ‘‘Rules of Engagement,’’ has been a ratings winner, so ‘‘The Class’’ might be dismissed.
— The New Adventures of Old Christine.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ comedy has had an up-and-down ratings chart despite her lively performance. Is there a Monday night survival battle between ‘‘Old Christine’’ and ‘‘The Class?’’

ABC
— What About Brian?
The Monday night romantic drama supposedly has great appeal to young female viewers, but audience ratings don’t reflect overall popularity.
—According to Jim.
Are fans tiring of the bickering between Jim Belushi and Courtney Thorne-Smith? Some ABC executives think so.
— The George Lopez Show.
Here’s another family comedy show with thinning ratings.
— The Knights of Prosperity.
This rowdy comedy, which features wacky New Yorkers’ plots to rob celebrities like Mick Jagger, received decent critical support while running into the ‘‘American Idol’’ destruction machine. Chances for its return look slim.

NBC
Bubble shows are all over the lineup as the fourth-place network attempts to regain its ratings momentum.
— Friday Night Lights and 30 Rock.
Both are definitely on the bubble because of anemic ratings. However, some at NBC think there’s audience growth potential in both.
— Crossing Jordan or Medium?
Or both? The crime series could be on their way out depending on what action dramas are in NBC’s programming cupboard.
— Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.
A few NBC executives, who like Aaron Sorkin’s style, still support the series. However, look for this bubble to burst.
— The Black Donnellys.
As a Monday night replacement for ‘‘Studio 60,’’ the Irish Mafia-style drama hasn’t generated much viewership or critical buzz. Is it a case of Black being too dark?
— Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
Creator Dick Wolf would howl loudly, but are three L&O shows one too many?

FOX
Where would the network be without ‘‘American Idol?’’
— Standoff.
A fair-to-middling FBI action story, this hour started well, but audience support has faded. Its move to Friday this week for seven episodes will decide ‘‘Standoff’s’’ fate.
— ’Til Death.
This mediocre-to-awful family comedy starring Brad Garrett and Joely Fisher could be saved because ratings have improved after it followed ‘‘American Idol’’ in some time periods.

THE CW
— Veronica Mars.
The crime series about a teenage detective who looks and acts like a college graduate seems to have lost its dramatic juice.
— Gilmore Girls.
The series will return only if both Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel sign new contracts.

**********

From some things I'v read, the problem with "Crossing Jordan" and "Medium" on NBC, as well as "Close to Home" on CBS is that they appeal to the "wrong" kinds of audiences. All three of these shows have pretty high numbers of people watching, but apparently their audiences consist almost exclusively of women in the 35+ age group, not the younger adults -- especially young males -- that advertisers crave.
"Close to Home" isn't even listed as being "on the bubble" any more, so I guess everybody feels it's a done deal, although I haven't read anything that says it's officially cancelled. "CtH" also probably has weaker ratings than the plethora of other crime shows on CBS and they do have to cancel *something* in order to have room for a few new shows next season.
