Subject: SWAT-oh my God!

I rent the first season of SWAT which came out about the time of the film. The show was only on 2 seasons & the first was a mid sesaon replacement so its only 13 eps. I remembered this show as a kid, all us boys jumped & climbed & rolled like we were SWAT members. Now seeing it 30 yearsa later, wow is this bad!!!

The acting is horrible, the characters one dimensional, the plots are contrived. The studio sets of the 70s look so fake. And the show comes off kinda neo-fascist with the only thing between armies of psychos & us is SWAT. The team is only 5 members although a guy drives their van but never participates (wonder why?). They all have great names like Hondo, Street, Deke, Luca & T.J.

They always try to talk the criminals into surrendering before they shoot them. However, when a criminal is shot, no blood. And they mention the suspects being drug users but never show them using or acting high (just psychotic). Very sanitized TV. The team also does the investigation part of the case too, I think real SWAT just show up for the fight & leave that for others. The writers rip off every 70s senario they can: a Manson type Family, distrubed Vietnam vets, SLA like poltical revolutionaries, Mafia hit men and even Middle Eastern terrorists (who turn out to be fake). Almost every ep has a hostage situation. But the good guiys always win & have a nice laugh back at the office which ends in a freeze frame.

Guess my boyhood has fonder memories than things actually were. It is a hoot to watch, don't get me wrong. The show was taken off after 2 seasons due to complaints about violence. What else does a SWAT team do? And by today's standards, as tame as they come. 2 seasaons, at the time it felt like the show was on for longer than that. Days go by quick when you get older.
