They had already said that if the show went into multiple seasons, the only permanent characters would be Knapp, Turner and the FBI agents; the Caines would have only been on it this season and a new family and victim would have been introduced next season.
I think the whole concepts of "mini-series" needs to be reintroduced. Some storylines are too detailed and complex for a single movie, but really don't lend themselves to even a 22-episode single TV season, much less multiple TV seasons.
Now we just have to hope that NBC execs keep their promise and do air the remaining eps of this show. I believe they may be moving it to Fridays or Saturdays, where the show would probably do less "damage" to their ratings, since not as many people watch TV on those nights anyway.
