According to several articles I've read on the 'net, Vanessa Ferlito, the actress who played Aiden, requested to be released from the show.
There seems to be a real epidemic of this lately; it also happened with actresses on "Numb3rs" and "NCIS". It's a shame, because just as I'm getting into a show and feel like I'm really getting to "know" the characters, one of the main actresses will decided she has something better to do. You would think, with all the aspiring actresses in Hollywood, that it would be fairly easy to find actresses who would *want* to be on a highly-rated TV drama for three or more seasons.
To answer your second question. . .I'm not sure. The episode certainly seemed to imply it was a case she'd worked on last season, but I only started watching CSI:NY in June, when it was in reruns, and so probably haven't seen all the first season eps.
