Subject: TV actresses

I always thought there were thousands of actresses in Hollywood who were just absolutely *DESPERATE* for a chance to star in a highly-rated primtetime TV series on one of the four major networks. Yet in the past couple of months leading actresses in two of my favorite TV shows -- Sasha Alexander of "NCIS" and Sabrina Lloyd of "Numb3rs" -- have asked to be written out the TV dramas they starred in because the work was "too demanding."
I knew TV actresses were well-paid but the pay must be much, much better than I ever even imagined, because apparently they make enough by working for a year or two to take off as much time as they want and not worry about whether or not they will ever get another job. I would think the fact that they have made it clear they don't have the stamina for steady work on TV dramas would make it highly unlikely that either actress will ever again be considered for one of the leads by any other TV show. And, while both are attractive women in their early 30s, my guess is they're both just a *little* bit too old to reasonably expect to be make it as movie stars. . . .most actresses who make the jump from TV to movies do it in their 20s. Yet they're several decades away from retirement, so I do wonder what they're planning on doing for the next 30 years or so. Perhaps they're going to stay home and raise families. (I don't know anything about the personal lives of either actresss. Have no idea whether they are married and/or have children.)
Here's what gets me. . .back in the 1980s and 90s most TV dramas basically just had *TWO* leads (i.e. Cybil Shepherd and Bruce Williss in "Moonlighting" or David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in "The X-Files') which meant that these leads had to be in virtually every scene of every episode. . .and somehow they managed to do it, for several years at least. One of the reasons networks have switched to mostly "ensemble" type dramas within the past decade is to make it easier for the leads; so they won't have to work quite as many hours. Apparently it's still not "easy" enough.
It must be very frustrating to be an aspiring actress in Hollywood these days. Imagine if you were toiling away doing commercials and occasional guest spots, hoping everyday that you'd get the shot at a lead role in a drama. . .then having to hear on a regular basis about actresses who had what you're working for and casually tossed it away.
