At the beginning of the episode Sayed is going around asking people where they were the previous night because he's trying to figure out who knocked him out and destroyed his radio. When he asks Locke, Locke points out that Sawyer would have the motive because he seems to have no reason to get off the island. Locke also gives Sayed one of his knives in case something like that happens again.

Sawyer finds Boone hunting around in his stuff and beats the crap out of him. Turns out Boone's sister, Shannon, has asthma and since Boone saw Sawyer reading a book that was checked in the same bag as Shannon's medicine, Boone figured Sawyer had it.

Katie tries to get Sawyer to think about Shannon as a human. She says that he has this letter that he's always reading that he cares so much about so he must care about something and he must be a human underneath all his sleaziness. So he shows her the letter and it's a letter addressed "Dear Mr. Sawyer" and it's written by some kid and it says something like, "you ruined my life. You had sex with my mom and stole our money and when my dad found out he killed her and then himself. One day I'm going to find you and give you this letter so that you can know what you did to me."

Sayed and Jack try and get Sawyer to give them the medicine but he refuses to unless Kate kisses him. Sayed tells Jack that he used to be an interrogator when he was in the military, and he'll get the medicine out of Sawyer. So they tie Sawyer to a tree and Sayed sticks slivers of wood underneath his fingernails and was about to take out his eye with the knife Locke gave him when Sawyer cracks and tells them he'll only tell Kate where the medicine is. So Kate comes to him and he convinces him to give him a kiss to get the info after all because he knows she won't let a girl die over kissing him. So they share what I think was a pretty hot kiss (Kate definitely looked like she was into it). After they're done Sawyer tells her he never had the medicine and that the book washed up on shore. Kate believes him and goes and tells Jack and Sayed. Sayed freaks out and says that he is still lying and goes racing to Sawyer to try and get more information. Sawyer has gotten loose from his ropes so the two of them fight for a little bit while Jack tries to break it up until Sayed stabs Sawyer in the arm with a knife. He hits an artery and Jack barely manages to keep him from bleeding to death.

Meanwhile back at the cave, Jin takes Michael aside and tells him that she can save Shannon from her asthma if he goes and gets her Eucalyptus from the jungle. Michael goes and finds some and she makes some kind of goop which she spreads onto Shannon's chest to make her able to breath again. Jack feels stupid that he didn't think of that.

The flashbacks this week are for Sawyer. Essentially he lives his life as a con man. He's seen having sex with this married woman who he convinces to get her husband to invest money in Sawyer's "company" with plans to just run off with the money once he's gotten it. Apparantly this isn't the first time he's done it, either. But just as he's about to make the deal, the couple's son comes into the living room. Sawyer kind of freaks out and tells them that the deal is off and he leaves them. No mention of what he was doing in Australia or why he was on the plane.

Towards the end Kate comes and finds him as he's recovering from his stab wound and tells him that she figures the only reason Sawyer didn't just tell people from the get go that he didn't have the asthma medicine is because he wants people to hate him. She says she looked at the envelope that the letter he showed her was in and it had a bicentennial seal on it. She figures out that he wrote the letter when he was a kid. He tells her that she's right and one day when he was grown he needed money really badly so he did the same thing that con man did to his parents. He says that day he became that man and has been living with his name ever since. It was made to look like he did it to torture himself because he hates himself and wants everyone else to hate him too.

At the end of the episode Sayed tells Kate that when he left the Republican Guard he told himself he would never allow himself to do what he did again. When he tortured Sawyer he saw a part of himself that he thought was gone, and he was ashamed. He couldn't allow himself to be around the others when there is the chance he might do it again, so he set off to make a map of the island.

Whew. I think I got everything. Sorry I didn't give you the synopsis earlier but I just watched last Wed's episode today so I didn't want to read what you had written. I'll have to comment on that later because I've been typing forever.
