My son has done the Prelim, the State and the International level of the Sun Burst Pageant. As a parent we all believe our child is beautiful. Of course we don't always see what the judges saw in the winner, but there are other categories that aren't seen on stage. For instance, Photogenic, Portfolio, and Composite, not to mention the Interview portion. I was quite impressed that you weren't required to sell ad pages which were with other pageants (that we did not go any farther in because it was too pricey). My son won in the Prelim, but he was the only one in his age category, for State he won 1st Runner-up (since I didn't enter him in everything he could not win any top prize). For the International Competition I did enter him in everything. On crowning day everything is a blur while you wait to hear your child's name. Out of 50 boys his age he placed 4th Runner up in Portfolio (all of which were 8x10 none taken in a Studio, I took most of them myself). His friend that also competed won a couple more trophies than him including Prettiest Hair, Placed for his Composite and got in the Top 10. My son only placed for Portfolio and not only got in the Top 10, he also got in the Top 5 then Placed 3rd Runner-up Overall. Although he didn't get as many trophies as his friend, I'm just glad he did as well as he did.
With Girls there is atleast 3times as much competition. But as long as you aren't a horrible stage mom or won't let your child talk to the other kids, this experiece can be rewarding. My son has 2 really good friends that he met at the State Level, now that we all live in different states us mothers have still kept in touch.
Now we are awaiting another State competition in May then Internationals in August.
I will warn you that it can be quite taxing on both parent(s) and child but if you allow the child to play and have fun and get as much rest as possible it will all be worth the money and experience.
