Subject: # of sports

I know no one wants to hear this, but turning on the UConn-Furman game made me think: should canisius consider cutting some of it’s current sports?

Furman did a few years ago, invested the money into basketball and there in the tournament for the second time in four years after going 43 years without. Not ideal, but it can’t be cheap to maintain a pool or have hockey. No Sport we have can change the trajectory of a school like men’s basketball (besides football for the schools that have it). Wondering if Canisius should take a look at copying what Furman did.

Cutting sports means losing students, which reduces enrollment, which causes more problems.

Isn't there a minimum number of sports that the NCAA requires for at least D1?

14, either equal number of male/female or 8 female and 6 male. The MAAC also has rules about "core sports," schools must sponsor.

Funny, I was just at Furman last April (brother lives nearby). They no longer have baseball, but keep the field in pristine condition because they know it will come back.

A previous AD made the decision to cut sports. It was a very unpopular move, and they fully expect those sports to be revived.

Beautiful campus.
